Budapest Incentive Trip | UEFA Champions League Final

Some incentive trips are shaped by the destination. Others are built around one unforgettable moment.

For our recent Budapest incentive trip, that moment was the UEFA Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Arsenal.

Our Incentives General Manager, Jenna De Allende, hosted a group on a trip that placed one of European football’s biggest events at the centre of the experience. Every part of the programme, from our arrival at the hotel to our time exploring the city, helped build excitement towards match day.

Budapest was not simply the backdrop. Its grand architecture, river views, and lively dining scene gave the group plenty to experience before the main event, while the final provided the energy and shared emotion that brought the entire trip together.

Accommodation Worthy of the Occasion

Anantara New York Palace Budapest

Our base was the Anantara New York Palace Budapest, a grand hotel set inside a 19th-century building.

For an incentive trip centred on a major sporting event, the hotel needs to support the sense of occasion. This one did exactly that.

The impressive interiors, high ceilings and ornate details gave the group a memorable welcome to Budapest. The hotel felt special from the moment we arrived, which helped set the tone for the days ahead.

Its most famous space is the New York Café, known for its marble columns, chandeliers and painted ceilings. Once a meeting place for Budapest’s writers and artists, it remains one of the city’s most recognisable interiors.

The rooms gave our group a comfortable place to recharge, while the spa, indoor heated pool and gym offered useful options during free time.

Planner Tip:

When a programme is built around a headline event, choose a hotel that strengthens the overall experience. It should feel like part of the reward rather than simply somewhere for the group to sleep.

We Used Budapest to Build Excitement

We Used Budapest to Build Excitement

The UEFA Champions League Final was always the main focus, but the experiences around it helped create momentum.

We began with a sightseeing cruise along the Danube. This was an easy and visually impressive introduction to Budapest, allowing the group to settle in while taking in landmarks such as the Hungarian Parliament Building, Buda Castle and the Chain Bridge.

The cruise also created time for guests to connect. With the match still ahead of us, conversation naturally turned to football, the teams and what everyone expected from the final.

This is where a well-planned incentive programme becomes more than a collection of activities. Each experience should add to the anticipation rather than compete with the main event.

Planner Tip:

Keep the first activity relaxed, particularly when guests have travelled a long distance.

Exploring the City

We Explored the City Together

Our MonsteRoller e-scooter tour through the city added a more active element to the programme. These sturdy electric scooters have extra-wide tyres, a low standing platform and a chopper-style design, making them comfortable and easy to handle.

We travelled by MonsteRoller through the historic Castle District, stopping at Buda Castle, Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion. The views across the Danube towards Parliament gave the group some of the best photo opportunities of the trip.

The MonsteRollers also encouraged interaction. We laughed, moved through the city together and enjoyed an experience that felt very different from a standard guided tour. It gave our group the chance to see more of Budapest while keeping the mood informal and sociable.

Planner Tip:

Do not overload the days before a major event. Choose activities that are fun, manageable and easy to adapt for different confidence or mobility levels.

We Made the Meals Part of the Occasion

We Made the Meals Part of the Occasion

The group dining experiences gave us valuable time together before match day. At Dunacorso Restaurant, we enjoyed a riverfront setting and a menu inspired by Hungarian culinary traditions, which may include favourites such as goulash, paprikash, schnitzel and classic local desserts.

We also dined at Spoon The Boat, a restaurant moored on the Danube with panoramic views of the Chain Bridge and Buda Castle. Its menu combines Hungarian favourites with international influences, with dishes such as chicken paprikash with sheep’s cheese dumplings, grilled perch with confit potatoes and beef tenderloin with truffle mashed potatoes. The selection changes over time, with seasonal dishes and chef’s specials appearing alongside the main menu.

The two venues offered very different experiences. Dunacorso introduced us to Budapest’s local flavours and dining culture, while Spoon The Boat delivered a more contemporary evening against the city’s illuminated skyline.

Planner Tip:

Choose restaurants that offer more than a meal. A memorable view, local flavours and flexible group spaces can help keep the excitement building towards the main event.

The Main Event

Puskas Arena

Everything led to the UEFA Champions League Final at the Puskás Aréna.

Match day carried a completely different energy. The city was filled with supporters, team colours and growing excitement, while the group knew that the experience they had travelled for was finally here.

Jenna hosted the group at a private VIP hospitality event at the stadium, where they could gather, enjoy food and drinks and prepare for the match before making their way to the stands.

Then came the moment that made the trip.

Walking into a packed arena for a UEFA Champions League Final is difficult to match. The noise, music, lights and anticipation created an immediate emotional high. Once the match began, the group became part of an occasion watched by football fans around the world.

That shared experience was the true reward. Regardless of which team each person supported, everyone was part of the same remarkable night.

Planner Tip:

Protect the main event. Keep the morning relaxed, arrange transport early and give guests very clear instructions about tickets, meeting points, security rules and stadium entry. Match day is not the time for an overcomplicated schedule.

Why Did the Programme Work?

The UEFA Champions League Final was the star of the programme, but Budapest gave the event the right setting.

The Anantara New York Palace brought a sense of occasion to the stay. The Danube cruise introduced the city at a gentle pace. The MonsteRoller e-scooter tour added fun and movement, while the dining experiences gave our group time to connect.

Together, these elements created anticipation without distracting from the reason we were there. For incentive travel planners, that is the key takeaway. When a trip is built around a major sporting event, allow that event to lead the story. Every hotel, activity and meal should support the build-up, strengthen the group connection and make the final moment feel even bigger.
