Winter ushers in the dry season across South Africa’s wildlife reserves. With little rain, animals gather around water sources, making for the best safari viewing. Days are mild and sunny, but mornings and evenings can be chilly. Cape Town on the other hand offers cold days with occasional rain.

SUMMER
OCTOBER TO MARCH
Cape Town is best in the summer months of October to March. Temperatures can get well into the 30° Celsius range (perfect beach weather!). While summer is the dry season in Cape Town, it is the wet season in South Africa’s reserves with rains and thunderstorms.

FAQS
Find Out All You Need To Know
When is the best time to visit South Africa?
- South Africa is a year-round destination, but the best time depends on what you want to experience.
- For safaris, the dry winter months (May–September) offer the best game viewing as wildlife gathers around water sources.
- For Cape Town and the Winelands, summer (November–March) brings warm, sunny days perfect for beaches, wine tastings, and outdoor adventures.
- For whale watching, visit the Whale Coast between July and November for front-row seats to breaching southern right whales.
- For a mix of everything, shoulder seasons (April–May & September–October) offer fewer crowds and a balance of great weather and wildlife sightings.
What should I pack for my trip?
- Light, breathable clothing for warm days and layers for cool mornings and evenings, especially on safari.
- Neutral-coloured outfits for game drives – avoid bright colours and dark blues/black, which can attract insects.
- A good pair of walking shoes for bush walks or exploring the cities.
- Sun protection – hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are a must.
- Binoculars and a camera to capture unforgettable wildlife moments.
How do I get around in South Africa?
- Domestic flights connect major cities and safari destinations quickly and comfortably.
- Light aircraft transfers are common for remote lodges, offering scenic aerial views en route.
- Private road transfers and luxury trains (like Rovos Rail) provide relaxed, scenic travel options.
- Self-drive is great for the Garden Route, but not recommended for safari destinations due to rough roads and long distances.
