Madikwe Safari Lodge
Experience a superb luxury safari in one of South Africa’s largest wildlife sanctuaries. Madikwe Game Reserve is home to all of Africa’s Big 5 (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and the more elusive leopard) as well as cheetah, brown hyena and packs of endangered wild dog. This is prime big game territory set against rugged landscapes with rocky hills, woodlands and rich, red earth.
Whether you’re travelling with kids or looking for a romantic getaway, Madikwe Safari Lodge ticks all the right boxes. Staying here you have a choice of three lodges: Lelapa Lodge has 12 suites (including two family rooms) and welcomes children of all ages. For something more intimate, the 4-suite Kopano Lodge is a great choice. And finally, Dithaba Lodge, set slightly higher up the hill, also has just four suites and is perfect for friends or a larger family wanting an exclusive safari experience.
Whichever of the three Madikwe lodges you pick, you’re assured of the same high standards. Each suite is housed in an air-conditioned chalet: the lounge area has a wood-burning fireplace, and the en-suite bathroom has both an indoor and outdoor shower. French doors open onto your own private deck which has a small plunge pool and fantastic views out over the reserve.
Madikwe is a malaria-free game reserve (again, great for families with young kids!). Being private, your guide can drive off-road getting you up close to sightings, and the guides here keep in radio contact – which increases your chances of seeing all the wildlife on your wishlist. Guided bush walks are available, and between game drives you can treat yourself to a massage out on your deck – drifting off as you listen to the sound of birds in the trees.
