Two of the best swimming beaches in Hermanus lie on your doorstep, and a 40-minute stroll along the incredibly scenic clifftop path takes you to the town centre (or the hotel will happily drive you there).
The interiors of Birkenhead House combine breezy beach house style with a quirky opulence. This award-winning boutique hotel has 11 suites located in 3 difference houses. Each suite is individually decorated with French antiques, splashes of colour, and either a sea or mountain view. There’s a split-level swimming pool set within a sheltered courtyard, and an infinity pool and terrace with the most amazing sea views!
Rates at Birkenhead House are all-inclusive, so everything from your arrival cocktail to that glass of wine over lunch is included (except reserve wines and spa treatments). Breakfasts are delicious with a wide range of a la carte and buffet options, while lunches and dinners include fresh seafood dishes. You can even go down and pick black mussels off the rocks with the chef!
Whales are by no means the only attraction: sandy coves, mountain walks, horse riding along the beach, shark-cage diving, tucked-away restaurants, and the nearby wine estates of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley all make for an unforgettable stay. However, if you want to see whales then you’ll need to travel between June and November – with the best months being September and October.
