Last month, Lylie and Chantel from the Ocean Islands team visited two resorts in Zanzibar and a few on Tanzania’s islands. In this first part of their blog series, Chantel shares about their experience at Mnemba Island that’s just off the coast of Zanzibar; and Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas that’s located on the mainland.

Mnemba Island (Zanzibar island)

The moment we arrived at Mnemba Island, off the coast of Zanzibar, I knew that this place would be what I call “a little piece of heaven”. The team welcomed us with cocktails and hand towels, making me feel completely at home.

After our welcome, we were escorted to our beautiful banda that looked like a huge, woven basket. It was absolute bliss to be surrounded by lush gardens and nature with the waves crashing not too far from our banda. The units are completely open (no windows and doors), which I absolutely loved as it felt like we were in the wild.

The food was delicious and full of flavour; the staff were incredibly friendly and made us feel special all the time. Nothing was ever too much for them! Our butler, Christopher, was especially phenomenal and nothing was too much to ask.

We were privileged to be able to watch the baby turtles being released into the ocean. This rare experience was my absolute highlight! The team prepared a forest dinner for us – a stunning and romantic way to dine – and they organised a sunset dhow cruise! It’s a must do at Mnemba Island.

We snorkelled, walked around the island, tried stand-up paddle boarding and immersed ourselves in the relaxing environment. Mnemba Island is perfect for honeymooners or couples. It’s the ultimate place to put your feet up and embrace the calm beauty that surrounds you.

I loved the staff interaction with the guests, which adds a special touch to this island paradise. A special thanks to the hosts Dave and Rodger, Christopher our butler, Solvey the yoga instructor, Ron the dive instructor as well as the two chefs, Stacy and Dave.

This is a private island with a ‘barefoot luxury’ atmosphere. Everything and everyone is natural and laid back. I can honestly say that Mnemba Island is one of my personal favourites, and can’t wait to go back!

Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa

After our stay at Mnemba Island, we headed off to Zanzibar. Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa is a beautiful modern resort with natural touches and décor. Located in lush surroundings, the rooms are lovely and spacious. The amenities that were in the rooms were divine and had a lovely aroma, and we even bought some to take home!

For those who are active and more adventurous at heart, the resort has a kitesurfing school offers the ideal opportunity to get out amongst the waves. It’s perfect for those who want to learn to kitesurf or are more experienced. The sand here is white, fine and perfect; and the beaches are stunning.

Overall, the food at Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa was delicious and the staff are attentive, professional and friendly. A special mention also goes out to our driver Macho and guide Silima who always answered our questions and had a great sense of humour for a good giggle.
