Cape Town is one of the world’s best loved cities. Take in the view from our famous flat-topped mountain; find your favourite white sand beach (penguins or palm trees?); visit the V&A Waterfront, Constantia Winelands, Kirstenbosch Gardens and Robben Island.
And what better way to round off a busy day, than returning somewhere that feels like home. A really beautiful home, styled by someone with immaculate taste. A place where you’re greeted by name, and can sink into a sofa while somebody mixes your favourite drink – made just the way you like it!
Boutique hotels have personality, flair, and a level of personal service that you just don’t find in most large hotels. Of all the great boutique hotels in Cape Town, and we have more than our fair share, here are a few of our favourites.
City Stays:
Kensington Place, Higgovale
Kensington Place has a peaceful setting on the slopes of Table Mountain, but wander down the road and you’ll find yourself amongst the cafés and restaurants of Kloof Street. An urban sanctuary with stylish suites, amazing breakfasts (served all day), and staff who are only to happy to share insider tips, organise Ubers or get you a table at that hard-to-book restaurant.
The Silo, V&A Waterfront
Cape Town’s hottest new hotel, The Silo towers above the soon-to-be-opened Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art. Built into an old grain silo, this unique hotel blends industrial elements with opulent interiors: chandeliers, contemporary art and bold splashes of colour. But the real talking point is the floor-to-ceiling faceted windows which put the city or harbour at your feet.
Four Rosmead, Oranjezicht
Like Kensington Place, Four Rosmead sits in a leafy neighbourhood an easy walk from Kloof Street and the city. Built in 1903, this lovely old house has 10 rooms, each opening onto a private garden, courtyard or balcony. There’s an excellent deli around the corner, and they’ll happily deliver if you feel like lunch in the gardens next to the pool (heated all year round).
Sea Views:
Ellerman House, Bantry Bay
After arriving at this Relais & Chateaux property, you simply won’t want to leave. Award-winning Ellerman House has wide green lawns, and a lovely pool area with plenty of sun loungers and sweeping ocean views. There are many reasons to love Ellerman, but two that really stand out are the hotel’s private art collection and 7,500-bottle wine cellar.
21 Nettleton, Clifton
21 Nettleton has just three suites and a spectacular penthouse. Locals call it ‘the castle’ and we can see why with its pillars, balconies, well-tended grounds; and inside the spiral staircase, grand pianos and array of antiques. That said, there’s nothing staid about 21 Nettleton. Instead look forward to sunset drinks on the terrace, and South African braais (BBQs) under the stars.
Sea Five Boutique Hotel, Camps Bay
Stay in the heart of Camps Bay, an easy stroll from its palm-lined beach and fashionable restaurants and bars. Sea Five Boutique Hotel has the feel of a luxurious beach house with inviting living spaces, fresh décor, and glass doors sliding open to ocean views. Service is excellent, and if you’re around in the afternoons you’ll be treated to tea and cake!
Out of Town:
Tintswalo Atlantic, Hout Bay
Tintswalo Atlantic has a very special location, tucked away in a national park below the famous Chapman’s Peak Drive. Wonderfully private, this honeymooners’ favourite is the kind of place where you could easily spend days reading, snoozing and listening to waves breaking on the pebble beach. About a 30-minute drive from Cape Town’s city centre.
The Last Word Long Beach, Kommetjie
The Last Word Long Beach sits right on a beautiful sweep of beach. Staying here puts you about a 45-minute drive from the city, but close to magnificent Cape Point Nature Reserve and the penguins at Boulder’s Beach. You won’t find busy streets and shops here, and the only crowds you’re likely to see are groups of surfers when the waves are just right.
