Botswana is a land of beauty. Our senior tour consultant, Sibylle, recently visited the top luxury lodges in Botswana of the AndBeyond portfolio.
Botswana’s 5-star properties offer amazing wildlife sightings, water- and land-based activities and top guest service in the delta.
We’ve listed her favourite Botswana lodges below… pick the one that suits you best!
1. Matetsi River Lodge, Botswana
Before getting to Botswana, Sibylle popped in at Matetsi Lodge on the Zambezi River upstream of Victoria Falls. This Zimbabwe lodge blends into its surroundings. The wildlife in the Matetsi Private Game Reserve is still shy and some patience is required. Yet the water activities are excellent here (view more photos of the brand-new property here).
Activities:
- Land & water
- Game drives – but game viewing is better at the other properties
- Canoeing
- Cruises on the Zambezi River
2. Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp, Botswana
While Nxabega is built in a way that it integrates into nature, it’s safe and private. The camp is well organised, run by a South African couple, and service is absolutely amazing! The tented camp has permanent water (and no plunge pools, sadly) and guests have access to motorised boats year-round.
Activites:
- Permanent water of the Delta: motorised boats
- Amazing game drives
- Lion, hyena, hippo
- Large variety of plains game
- Birding: Fish Eagle
3. Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge, Botswana
With semi-permanent water, Xudum has either motorboat or mokoro activities depending on the water levels. Just a note: the wooden suites are made of plywood and get quite warm in the height of summer.
“Xudum feels like someone’s home”.
Activites:
- Always have water, but levels are seasonal
- High water: Motorboat
- Low water: Mokoro
- Game drives & water crossings
4. Xaranna Okavango Delta Camp
With its own resident hippo, Xaranna is a special lodge! It has plunge pools and is the perfect setting for honeymooners. Spacious. Romantic. Just breathtaking.
Activities:
- Always have water, but levels are seasonal
- High water: Motorboat
- Low water: Mokoro
- Game drives & water crossings
5. Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge, Botswana
The 9 suites of Sandibe are situated closely together but far away enough to feel private. Designed to look like a bird’s nest, the main area is striking with its exposed wooden structure. There are only game drives available (no water activities) but the wildlife is plentiful and varied. A top game viewing experience!
Activites:
- Land-based, i.e. game drives & walking
- Lion, elephant, rhino, giraffe
- Wild dog sightings
- Plains Game (no Lechwe, not enough water)
