Matemwe Retreat
Honeymoon-perfect Matemwe Retreat has four private villas, set on a secluded stretch of coastline on the northeast of Zanzibar Island. The villas sit tucked amongst palm trees above a small sandy beach, and all make the most of their turquoise ocean views.
This is a fantastic location, just a 30-minute boat ride from Mnemba Island and the coral reefs of the Mnemba Atoll. Spend lazy days at your beachside home, and go snorkelling and diving amongst colourful reef fish with a good chance of seeing rays, turtles and dolphins too. Stone Town lies around an hour’s drive away, or you can stroll across to the main lodge which has a lovely swimming pool area, open-air restaurant and a spa.
However, there really is little reason to leave your villa as you have your own butler, and a personal chef who’ll whip up delicious dishes according to your tastes and dietary needs. As for the villas, on the ground floor there’s an air-conditioned bedroom with a king-size bed, and en-suite bathroom with a sunken bathtub with ocean views. Outside on the verandah is a comfortable daybed and large hammock where you can settle in and watch the fishing dhows come and go.
Then, a real highlight of the Matemwe Retreat villas is their spacious roof decks which each have sun loungers, cushioned couches and even a plunge pool. This really is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon with your butler on hand to bring you your favourite drink.
