Marion Van Der Schyff
My career in travel started over a decade ago at a company specialising in holidays to the Indian Ocean islands. I was lucky to visit incredible islands, including those off the coast of Mozambique, Zanzibar, and Madagascar. I later moved to a company that specialised in safari getaways within Southern and East Africa and explored spectacular game reserves.
I’m passionate about South Africa and Africa – always excited to promote everything we have to offer. I know that once you have visited this continent, you’ll be aching to return as it is such a special part of the world.
When not working, I enjoy relaxing with friends and family, bird watching, and one of my favourite weekend activities – exploring the Cape Winelands.
What’s been your favourite safari experience?
I was absolutely blown away by the Maasai Mara. I thought I knew what to expect, but nothing could’ve prepared me for the experience. I’ve never been to a place where there is something to see no matter where you look: from herds of buffalo and topi (a type of antelope) on the horizon to massive hyena clans and the biggest crocodiles I’ve ever seen in the Mara River.
Where did your love for Africa come from?
Having grown up in the Lowveld, I was very fortunate to visit the Kruger National Park on a regular basis. This is where I developed my love for the bush and everything it has to offer. This is where I feel most at peace, and anytime I’m in the bush, I know that I’m home.
What’s your top tip for travellers?
Take time to enjoy the small things, and always dress in layers when out on a drive.
