Charlotte spent an evening at Radisson RED in Cape Town at the V&A Waterfront on its opening weekend and was awestruck by this unique Cape Town hotel.
Radisson RED will not be everyone’s cup of tea that is for sure, but for the well-travelled, game for anything, ageless traveller of the 21st century, the hotel is a perfect fit. Entering the building you feel as if you’ve entered a quirky art gallery/lounge. The staff are relaxed and friendly, some even skateboarding through the foyer. Their uniforms are casual, a simple you guessed it, RED t-shirt and black pants.
The staff here are not fished from the hospitality pond but rather from the go-getter, friendly and approachable pond of life. The staff are there to make you feel welcome and at home in their hotel and if they have the right attitude and determination they are welcomed to work with the RED team.
Staying with the unconventional, the entire hotel is digitised which means, if you do not want to interact with a staff member, you can do everything from check-in to room service via the red app on your phone or one of the hotel tablets.
The rooftop bar is edgy and modern with a casual, rustic edge. From its geometric bright yellow chairs huddled around small tables alongside the pool to the long communal-style wooden table and benches at the bar, the space is comfortable and inviting. The Mixologists know how to mix great cocktails and the views are fantastic and you can even enjoy an early morning yoga class.
The bedrooms are spacious and clean with white linen to contrast the graffitied black and white walls. With minimalistic décor you are able to breathe easy and relax. One note from Charlotte was that the windows in the suites do not open and this is always something she prefers in a hotel.
Charlotte enjoyed breakfast in the ground floor restaurant which is adjacent to the foyer. The design leads on from the rest of the hotel with an industrial feel, an exposed brick wall on the one side and pops of red and yellow dot the check tiled floor. The food tastes great and is served in an unconventional way. The eggs benedict is served on a metal dustpan (minus the broom!)
