I recently had the pleasure and privilege of attending the rebirth of Quoin Rock Wine Estate, and what an exceptional evening it was!  All of Cape Town’s wine and travel industry leaders were there, decked out in their finest attire.

Quoin Rock Winery is situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains in Stellenbosch, in the Cape Winelands. The road leading up to the estate is unassuming, but from the moment you’re greeted at the boom by security you know that you’re in for something special. Walking into the entrance you’re hit by the most exquisite beauty and views that take your breath away. A truly magical setting.

The award-winning musical trio, Sterling EQ, set the mood for the evening, as highly professional waitrons served a welcome drink of peach bellinis. With the sun setting, we could not have asked for better weather: balmy and warm and with views for miles – this was heaven on earth!

The venue offers wine tasting during the day, and in the evening transforms into what is set to be a BEST restaurant contender. Gǻte at Quoin Rock is an architectural masterpiece that has taken years to complete, down to each perfect detail. True brilliance and well done to the restaurant owners, my friends Dennis and Julia. I am in awe!

We were treated to the most exquisite wines, along with a fantastic introduction by the estate’s winemaker Jacques Maree.  All wines are aged in French oak and are full of character, and there’s a wine to suit every palate.  My favourite is the MCC (South Africa’s version of “champagne”).  An elegant and creamy brut that left us wanting more!

Executive Chef, Chef Rikku then delighted our palates with some of the most incredible gourmet experience.  The 16-course taster menu is an absolute sensory delight, as theatrical as it is delicious, with stand-out flavours such as macarons with black caviar, oysters and curry candyfloss.

Before coming to Gǻte, Chef Rikku worked alongside several decorated chefs including Marco Pierre White, Thomas Keller and Heston Blumenthal. His contemporary approach, mix of Nordic themed molecular gastronomy and use of only the finest seasonal ingredients makes Gǻte a restaurant that’s sure to hit he top lists and we’re going to see Chef Rikku racking up the awards shortly!

There’s no doubt that Quoin Rock is set to become a firm favourite. World, look out!
