Benguerra Island lies in a scattering of tropical islands, the Bazaruto Archipelago, off the southern coast of Mozambique. A paradise of broad sandy beaches and turquoise sea, where shades of deeper blue hint at remarkable coral reefs protected within the Bazaruto Marine National Park.

Sound good? We certainly think so! Especially after chatting to Africa Travel Expert Tanya Drummer, who recently stayed on the island at one of our favourite Mozambique hideaways: Azura Benguerra Island.

Helicopter flight to Benguerra Island
An 8-minute helicopter transfer took us from Vilanculos to Benguerra Island.

What was your first impression of the property?

On arrival at the heli pad we were greeted by lodge management and staff with cold refreshing towels, big smiles and warm greetings. We were escorted to the Star Bar and enjoyed bubbly and ice water while dealing with the normal formalities of checking in. My first impression was “Wow!”. I knew immediately that we were in for a treat.

Azura Benguerra Island, Mozambique
Azura Benguerra Island has 20 villas spaced along a broad sweep of beach.

What did you think of Azura Benguerra’s accommodation?

Each villa is quite private with a tropical garden facing the beach including sun loungers and a beach sala offering stunning sunset views. The water comes right up to the edge of the property at high tide. It really is pretty special!

The look, feel and atmosphere of each villa is very similar with a lot of personal touches. For clients who want to splash out on extra space, the Luxury Infinity Villas are larger than most and have a decent size pool – highly recommended!

Benguerra Island activities, Mozambique
Exploring the beautiful island, from tall sand dunes to protected coral reefs.

Tell us about some of the activities on the island.

I am generally very wary of the ocean and its creatures but felt so reassured by John’s care in the water. I actually love, love, LOVED the snorkeling and would do it again in a heartbeat as this was a highlight for me! The marine life is plentiful, colorful and gorgeous.

Some of our group went scuba diving and saw turtles and even dugong in the distance.

Beachfront
Jumping for joy after our island picnic (which was beautifully set up with great attention to detail).

We were treated to a lavish picnic on a remote island, which was very special and made me feel like royalty.

The island drive included a visit to the primary school as well as the clinic. It was interesting to see how the local communities in Mozambique go about their daily lives on this little island.

There are also these towering sand dunes, and while the idea of climbing them was daunting – it turned out to be surprisingly easy and great fun. Well worth the stunning views from the top!

Dining
Look forward to light and tasty meals, loads of fresh seafood and delicious cocktails!

What stood out in terms of cuisine?

Don’t get me started on the cuisine! All meals at Azrua Benguerra Island were expertly created with everything freshly made. And, although every single meal was superb, I will forever remember the very first lobster lunch as one of my favorite meals of all time!

Staff at Azura Bengerra Island
The staff are wonderful, and really go out of their way to make your stay memorable.

How did you find the service at Azura Benguerra?

What stood out for me was the intuitive attention of our personal host who was always on call. No request was too big or a bother at all, and if you request something on one day – it’ll be there again the next. The genuine kindness and willingness to make our stay comfortable was incredible.

The lodge managing couple are equally amazing and their passion for the property and all their guests is noticeable. The bar staff are lovely, so humble and friendly; even teaching us to play one of their local games and perhaps allowing us to win once in a while.

Who would you recommend a stay here?

Azura Benguerra in Mozambique is for everyone. Ideal for honeymooners, romantic getaways and any celebratory occasions.

They don’t really have the traditional kids’ clubs or huge variety of motorised watersports that you might find in larger resorts. There is enough to keep you busy most of the time (if that’s what you want). That said, this is a place offering quality time rather than constant entertainment.
