Time + Tide Miavana
Time + Tide’s Miavana is Madagascar’s brand-new luxury resort (opened in 2017) and gets our stamp of approval. The five-star resort is located on a private island in Nosy Anko on Madagascar’s northern tip.
The mid-century stone structures face the beach and each villa has a private pool and direct access to the beach. You can head to the rooftop bar for a glass of champagne, or try the delicious fusion cuisine at the three dining spaces. There’s also an extraordinary museum of curiosity.
It’s the little things that make this one of the most exclusive getaways; floor-length curtains were hand-dyed a topaz blue, furniture includes Seventies-style sofas and the walls are made of hand-cut stone. The interiors echo the natural surroundings of beach, wood and sky.
You can snorkel and scuba dive, explore coral beds and reefs; traverse Nosy Ankao – the archipelagos’ largest of five islands. Apparently, it used to be home to seasonal fishermen and even pirates. You can also meet the lemurs on the island and Madagascar’s endemic animals. Keen fishermen can go fly or boat fishing (catch and release) – and for the more active travellers, there’s everything from paddle boarding to kite surfing.
