Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge

Sabyinyo Silverback sits high in the foothills of the Virungu Mountains, just outside Volcanoes National Park. This is a fantastic base for gorilla trekking as you’re a short drive (around 15 minutes) from park headquarters, the starting point of your hike.

The main lodge has a lovely lounge area and a terrace with dramatic views of the surrounding volcanoes. Spread out around the gardens are six cottages, two suites and a 2-bedroom family cottage. The cottages are spacious and comfortable: a wood burning fire wards off chilly evenings, and each veranda has a hammock for lazy hours spent gazing at the green mountain views.

Sabyinyo Silverback is owned by a community trust that supports socio-economic and conservation projects in the area. The staff are friendly and attentive; it feels like nothing is too much trouble from waking you up with fresh coffee to cleaning your hiking boots after you’ve trekked.

The chance to spend an hour with highly endangered mountain gorillas is certainly the main drawcard of a stay at Sabyinyo Silverback. There are, however, a number of other activities on offer including trekking to see the golden monkeys, bird watching, mountain biking and a walking tour of a nearby village – a great way to learn more about Rwandan culture and everyday life.
