Mantis Akagera Game Lodge is a great choice for those wanting exhilarating Big 5 and water-based safari experiences. The lodge is located in the southern section of the Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only Big 5 reserve, and is just 20 minutes drive from lake Ihema. The national park is home to numerous animal species and about 500 bird species, including the rare Shoebill and Papyrus Gonolek. It is also the largest protected wetland in central Africa, encompassing seven lakes, marshes, a savanna, mountains and woodland. The region is explored on game drives led by passionate and experienced guides, and boat trips on Lake Ihema enable a different perspective of the landscape.

The recently renovated lodge boasts 60 en-suite and air-conditioned bedrooms. Those on the first floor have balconies that look on the park, and those on the bottom level are somewhat larger to cater for families. Bedrooms are spacious with workspace facilities and WiFi access for those who need to stay connected to the outside world. On-site facilities include a swimming pool, bar and restaurant, tennis court and a conference room – the only facilities of this kind within the park. The Shoebill Restaurant serves great seasonal and locally sourced produce.
