Gorah Elephant Camp
Gorah Elephant Camp is the only lodge set within a private concession in Addo National Park. Mornings start early with expertly guided game drives tracking the park’s elephant, lion and rhino; while afternoons are spent sipping tea and nibbling snacks on the shaded patio as wildlife comes and goes at the lodge waterhole.
Built in 1856, the main manor house has been immaculately restored and recalls the opulence of safaris in centuries past with its period furnishings, polished silver, G&T’s in the afternoon and candlelit three-course dinners at night. As for the accommodation, Gorah Elephant Camp has 11 luxurious tented suites each with a private deck offering views over the savannah plains and animals passing by on their way to the waterhole.
Addo is best known for its vast herds of elephant with an estimated 600 elephant living in the park! Game here is relaxed around vehicles so look forward to up-close sightings as herds trundle across the road. And, along with elephants, there’s plenty of other wildlife including buffalo, lion, zebra, a variety of antelope and colourful collection of birds.
Addo Elephant Park lies in the malaria-free Eastern Cape, and Gorah Elephant Camp is a good choice for a family safari. Children over the age of ten are allowed to join their parents on game drives, and the reserve can be easily combined with a beach holiday on the beautiful Garden Route.
